Josephine A. "JoAnne" Shafer, 79, of Grand Island, Nebraska, died Saturday, January 18, 2014, at St. Francis Medical Center. JoAnne was born March 20, 1934, at Wood River, Nebraska, the daughter of Donald & Ann C. (Malone) Hindmarsh. Survivors of her immediate family are: sons and a daughter-in-law, Mike and Mickey Shafer of Bellevue, NE. and Dan Shafer of Ruston, LA.; daughters and sons-in-law, Terry and Tom Urbanski of Grand Island, NE. andCynthia and Harvey Schultz of York, NE.; 14 Grandchildren; 22 Great Grandchildren; brother and sisters-in-law: Don and Rosemary Hindmarsh of Omaha, NE. and Marcia Hindmarsh of Fremont, CA.; sisters and brothers-in-law: Bob Russell of Grand Island, NE, Alice Bellamy of Cairo, NE. and Betty Jane and Dwayne Lewis of Gretna, NE. and a host of family and friends. JoAnne grew up and received her education in Wood River graduating from Wood River High School in 1951. She attended Western Union Telegraph School and after receiving her certificate she was employed as an automatic operator at Western Union in Rapid City, SD, San Diego, CA, Lincoln, NE, and Scottsbluff, NE. She married Joseph "Spud" Shafer on February 1, 1953, at Los Angeles, CA. Since 1982 she resided in Grand Island working as a Paralegal. At the time of her retirement in 2000 she was employed by Hall County Attorney in Child Support Enforcement. JoAnne enjoyed the company of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved sharing her faith with everyone she met and quietly ministering to those in need. JoAnne was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. JoAnne was preceded in death by: son, Donald Douglas Shafer in 1960; parents; brother, Jim Hindmarsh; sister Mary Lou Russell and brother-in-law, Larry Bellamy. Mass of the Christian Burial was Tuesday, January 21, 2014, at 10:30 a.m., at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Grand Island, Nebraska. The Rev. Todd K. Philipsen and Rev. Mark A. Maresh were co-celebrators. JoAnne bequeath her remains to the Anatomical Board of the State of Nebraska. Inurnment was in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery, Grand Island, Nebraska
