Bio

Murray Lawson was the first of three sons born to Wesley and Crilla (McQueen) Lawson. He grew up in the Stony Point community southwest of Vinland and attended Stony Point Grade School. When Murray was seven years old, his father died. So, at a young age, Murray went to live with neighbors Jess & Dora Deay to help work their farm. He graduated from Vinland Rural High School in 1937. Before the declaration of World War II, Murray joined the U.S. Navy and served aboard the U.S.S. Vestal in the South Pacific. His ship was at Pearl Harbor when the Japanese attacked Hawaii on Dec. 7, 1941. At the war's end, Murray returned to Douglas County and married Rose Nichols on September 23, 1945. He joined the Douglas County sheriff's department and was one of three deputies who patrolled the county. In 1948, Murray and Rose became partners with Perry and Sadie Stevens on their dairy farm at Vinland. They later purchased the farm and moved into the home where they spent the rest of their married lives together. Murray drove a school bus for the Vinland schools for many years. He died of skin cancer at the age of 71.
