Vernon Anderson, 84, died Monday, January 6, 2014 at the Avera Dougherty Hospice House, Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Vernon LeRoy Anderson was born February 14, 1929 at Ansley, Nebraska, the son of Leo and Blanche (Hammer) Anderson. He grew up in rural Ansley and graduated from Arcadia High School in 1949. He served in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1954 during the Korean War. On November 20, 1954 Vernon was united in marriage to Cecelia King at Goodrich, Illinois. For 12 years they were on the road with Stake Construction Company settling in Lennox, SD in 1965. In 1985 Vernon began work for Butterfield Construction, McPhearson, KS. He later drove school bus for the Lennox School District for 13 years and the Tea School District until retirement. Vernon was a member of Saint Magdalen's Catholic Church and Brethorst-Burma American Legion Post #174, Lennox. He enjoyed woodworking, construction work with his son Mike, cards-especially cribbage and time with his family. Vernon was preceded in death by his parents, wife Cecelia on May 7, 2008, one son, Richard Vernon, in 1955; one daughter-in-law: Carole Anderson in 2006; siblings: Ival Anderson, Keith Anderson, Roberta Bland and Cleo Peterson. Grateful for having shared his life are his ten children: Regina Johnson (fiancé Joe Steever) of Lennox, Patrick (Shawn) Anderson of Tea, Rebecca (Scott) Hofer of Sioux Falls, Michael (fiance Renae Ibach) Anderson of Lennox, Rachelle (Todd) Murra of Sioux Falls, Joseph (Karen) Anderson of Harrisburg, Casey (Michelle) Anderson of Gulf Breeze, FL, Reshia (Anthony) Nickles of West Fargo, ND, Robin Anderson of Sioux Falls and Kelly Anderson (girlfriend Kim Powers-Higgens) of Sarasota, FL; 20 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; siblings: Robert Anderson, Donna Longenecker, Betty Thompson, Emma Stefka, Mary Stefka, and Theo Anderson plus nieces and nephews.
