Donald Lee Butts, 80, of Grand Island died Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2013, at his home. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Apfel Funeral Home in Grand Island. A private inurnment will be at Westlawn Memorial Park. Mr. Butts was born Dec. 9, 1933, in Burwell to Cecil and Irma (Shafer) Butts. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty. Survivors of the immediate family include three daughters and their spouses, Pam Labart of Grand Island, Deb and Tony Brunt of Grand Island, Cecile and Jerry Lessig of Yuma, Ariz., and a chosen daughter, Becky Alexander of Briadwood, Ill.; and two brothers, Kenneth Butts and Raymond Butts. Also cherishing his memory are six grandchildren, Corrina (Brunt) Peters, Bobbie Jo (Labart) Ogle, Travis Brunt, Bill Labart, April Ann (Lessig) Glass, and Jeremy Lessig; 10 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He grew up in Burwell and graduated from Burwell High School. He married Betty Murphy in 1954 in Grand Island, where they lived and raised their family. Donald was a farmhand, a mechanic for COOP and a truck driver for Diamond Engineering. He was also a Milk Man for Fairacres. Donald was a Volunteer Fireman in Grand Island and was President of District 38 School Board. He enjoyed camping, fishing, and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Donald was preceded in death by a brother, Leonard Butts; three sisters, LaVonne Tefft, Madelon Peterson and Janice Craven; and two grandchildren, Stephanie and Little Jerry Lessig.
