(The "Blassingham" surname appeared to evolve to a "Blasingham" spelling over the years. To be consistent, I will use the double s.) Mary Susan Stubblefield married John D. Blassingham on 23 Feb 1839 in Fayette Co., Indiana. They had at least five children together--Thomas Alva (9 Mar 1842 Fayette, IN - 2 Dec 1917 IA), Sarah Jane (3 Mar 1844 IN - 4 Jan 1930)), John Hillard (1845-1909), Francis "Frank" Marion (1848 - 7 Dec 1922), and James C. (1850 - 1932). Tragedy struck on 21 Apr 1850 when Susan lost husband John. He was but 34 years old. Susan gave birth to son James about that same time. The 1850 Census on which Susan appeared, was enumerated on September 9th in this area. Susan, appeared as head of household, widowed, aged 28 (by her account, though she was actually about 31), living in Plymouth (mistakenly noted as "My Division by census enumerator George Pomeroy), Marshall Co., Indiana. With her were her five children--Thomas, aged 8, Sarah, aged 6, John, aged 5, Marion, aged 2, and James, aged 5 months. Neighbors to Susan and her children were Edward and Lavina Burden and their children, which included son Joseph Burden, aged 20. Nine years after that census, Susan married Joseph Burden on 20 Jan 1859 in Marshall County. She was 39, he was about 29. They would have at least two children together--Joseph Edward (9 Apr 1860 - 2 Sep 1933) ad Eva Ellsworth (Nov 1863 - ). It was also a second marriage for Joseph. He had previously married Elizabeth Hindle on 14 Sep 1854 in Marshall County, and they became parents of daughter Alice a year later in 1855. I don't know what became of Elizabeth. Susan and Joseph's blended yours-mine-and-ours family appeared together on the 1960 Census, living in Center Township (today part of Plymouth), Marshall County. Joseph, aged 30, was a farmer. Susan, enumerated with her first name Mary, aged 29 (by her account, though she was actually about 40), was home with their combined seven children--Alice Burden, aged 5, Joseph Burden Jr., aged 2 months, and the five Blassingham children--Thomas, aged 18 and doing farm labor, Sarah, aged 16, John, aged 14, Marion (aka Frank), aged 12, and James, aged 10 and mistakenly enumerated as a daughter named Jane. During the Civil War, Susan's son Thomas served with Co. D of the 73rd Indiana Infantry. He was captured at one point, but returned home to his family at the end of the war. Susan and Joseph's nest began to empty in the decade that followed. Susan's son Thomas married Comfort America Williams on 1 Apr 1866. Comfort was the daughter of John and Sarah Williams. Susan's daughter Sarah Jane married Henry Clay Taber on 24 Oct 1867. Both marriages took place in Marshall County. When the 1870 Census came around, Susan and Joseph were still living in Plymouth's Center Township. Joseph, aged 41, was busy farming. Susan, aged 48 (by her account, though she was actually closer to 50 or 51), was keeping house. Still at home with her were Joseph Jr., enumerated with his middle name Edward, aged 9, Eva, aged 6, and two Blassingham children--John, aged 24, and James, aged 20. More marriages filled the years that followed that census. Susan's son Frank married Emma Sheets on 20 Apr 1871, and Susan's son John married Isabella Awalt on 21 Jan 1872. Isabella was the daughter of John Adam and Mary C. Awalt. Joseph's daughter Alice married Rufus H. Hawley on 10 Aug 1873. All three marriages took place in Marshall County. The year 1880 found Susan and Joseph still in Plymouth. Joseph, aged 52, was still actively farming. Susan, aged 60, was keeping house. Still at home with her were Joseph Jr., aged 20, and Eva, aged 16. With no 1890 Census available, the only news I can report in that interim is that Susan's husband Joseph died on 15 Jan 1894. He would just miss daughter Eva's wedding on 26 Sep 1894 to Miles Pomeroy, the son of William Pomeroy and Sarah VanVactor. Susan, widowed, aged 81, appeared without her helpmate on the 1900 Census. She reported that she had had eight children, but that only seven had survived to that census. I cannot identify the missing child. And though Susan was living alone, next door to her were daughter Eva, her husband Miles Pomeroy, and three of Susan's granddaughters--Hattie, Louise and Frances. A year after that census, Susan departed this earth on 26 Aug 1901 at age 82.
