Copied with permission from the Shawnee News-Star: October 26, 2005: Shawnee resident Mary Ann Burton, 88, died Tuesday, Oct. 25, at a local nursing home. She was born Dec. 6, 1916, in Wanette to T.E. and Lona(Hutcheson) Conley. She attended Lone Oak and Wanette schools, graduating from Wanette High School. On Nov. 14, 1936, she married J.S. "Jim" Burton in Wanette. She worked in a grocery store in California for several years before moving to Shawnee in 1950 where she worked at Sylvania and then Central State until her re-tirement. Mary Ann was a member of the Lexington Eastern Star. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a daughter, Carolyn Sue Martin; an infant son, Jackie Lavell Burton; two infant grandchildren; three brothers, Ralph Conley, T.E. Conley Jr. and E.P. Conley and two sisters, Nema William and Evelyn Beaon. Survivors include two brothers and sisters-in-law, Delbert and Dorothy Conley of Shawnee and Ike Eugene and Shirley Conley of Plano, Texas; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Barbara and Otis Vanderpool of Wichita, Kan., Bonnie and Bill Walker of Guyman and Elwynna and Herbert Melot of Shawnee; two sisters-in-law, Lavern Conley of Purcell and Edra Conley of Norman; and several nieces and nephews, Service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Wanette Cemetery Chapel with the Rev. Leon Lutts officiating. Burial will follow at Wanette Cemetery under the direction of Walker Funeral Service.
