John H. Ellison Sr. was born on May 25, 1813, the son of Jonathan Ellison and Rachel Newman. His first marriage was to Rebecca Jane Leath on May 18, 1833 in Dandridge, Jefferson County, Tennessee. Together, they had the following children: Martha Jane Ellison 1836 Josiah Silas Ellison 1837 John H. Ellison Jr. 1838 William Carroll Ellison 1843 Marshall Walker Ellison 1844 Mary Elizabeth Ellison 1847 Malinda Mandy Ellison 1850 Rebecca Priscilla Ellison 1854 After the passing of his first wife, John married Julia Ann Finchum on April 9, 1856 in Jefferson City, Tennessee.
