Frank Zhanel, 94, passed away in Ennis, Texas, on Wednesday, December 11, 2013. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, December 12, 2013, with Rosary at 7 p.m., in the J.E. Keever Mortuary Chapel of Ennis. Mass of the Christian Burial will take place at 10 a.m., Friday, December 13, 2013, in the St. John Catholic Church of Ennis with Father Fred Caldwell as celebrant. Interment will take place in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Frank was born in Creechville, Texas, to the late Anton and Mary (Dlabaj) Zhanel. He grew up in Creechville, Texas, and attended Creechville Schools. On May 6, 1947, he married Margie Krajca and they made their home in Dallas before moving back to Ennis in 1955. Frank served his country proudly as a Staff Sergeant in the United State Army in the European Theater during World War II where he received a Purple Heart, two Clusters, a Bronze Star, and two presidential citations. Frank worked for Magnolia Oil Company for ten years in the Geo-Physical Lab, as a machinist for Ennis Carbon Plant, for Cody Manufacturing, and was the owner of East Sonoma Welding Repair. He was a member of St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church which he helped to build alongside his father and his brother, John, KJT, the VFW and the American Legion. In his spare time, Frank enjoyed fishing and working with metal. Whatever Frank needed he designed and created in his workshop. His family and his faith were most important in his life He was preceded in death by his wife, Margie, in January of 2006; five sisters; and four brothers. Frank is survived by son, Larry "L.Z." Zhanel and his wife, Frances, of Ennis; daughters: Shirley Kelly and her husband, Paul, of Anchorage, Alaska, Carol Zumhof and her husband, Brian, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Berny Distasio and her husband, Ray, of Ennis, and Patty Lee and her husband, Tommy, of Ennis; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brother, Leslie Zhanel, of Ennis; sister, Bessie Laznovsky, of Ennis; many other relatives and friends.
