Wife of W.E. Shrode
From an 1898 Nance County, Nebraska, newspaper clipping file, publication date unknown, transcribed by Linda Berney: Died, Nov. 28, 1898, Lucy, beloved wife of Wm. Shrode. The sad news of the death of Mrs. Shrode caused a cloud of sorrow to spread over the entire community. She had been an invalid for the past three years, but despite the best available medical attention and tender care administered by loving hands, she succumbed to that dread disease consumption like in most cases always claims its victim. Mrs. Shrode, whose maiden name was Lucy Fogelsong, was born in 1873 in Iowa, and was therefore in her 25th year at the time of her demise. When but a child she moved with her parents to Plattsmouth, Nebr., living there until seven years ago. Since then she has been a resident of this vicinity. Five years ago she was married to William Shrode, who besides a mother, two sisters and two brothers she leaves to mourn her loss. She had a wide circle of friends and relatives and was admired and respected by all who knew her. As a mark of respect, all the schools in the surrounding districts were suspended the day of the funeral, which was held at 11 o'clock Tuesday from her late home to the Methodist church of which she was a devoted member. The edifice was packed to its utmost by a large assemblage of relatives and friends who came to pay their last respects to a departed friend. Rev. Trezona of St. Edward conducted the funeral services and preached a sermon most fittingly for the sad occasion. From the church the remains were followed by a cortege nearly a mile long which wended its way to the Skeedee cemetery where they were laid to final rest, and sleeps beneath a little mound overlooking the valley where in life the deceased had so often traversed. The bereaved husband and the mournful mother, sisters and brothers have the profound sympathy of all.
