Bio

Edwin Cink of Sacramento, CA passed away at the age of 88 in Vista, CA on November 28, 2013, where he lived the last two years of his life near his loving stepson and family. Edwin Cink was born June 5, 1925, to Bessie and Joseph Cink who farmed near Stirum, ND. He was the youngest of 12 children, two who died in childhood. The family later moved to Oakes, ND. After high school, Edwin moved to San Antonio, TX, joining his older brother Frank and his wife Clarice. There he got his start working as an Army aircraft mechanic, where Frank taught flying lessons to new recruits in the Army Air Corps. After the war, Edwin returned to North Dakota and attended Wahpeton School of Science, earning his degree in airplane mechanics. During the Korean War, Edwin served as a radio transmitter, which later spurred an interest in his short-wave radio hobby. After his military service, he helped manage the local airport in Valley City, ND, with his brother Frank. They went into the business of teaching flying lessons and crop-spraying until Frank's death in 1957. Edwin also spent many years as an auto mechanic in Valley City. Edwin remained with his brother's family, helping Clarice raise her three children, Juleen, Bonnie and Ron. Besides mentoring his nephew and nieces, he was a "built-in babysitter", according to his sister-in-law, Clarice Cink. His niece Bonnie especially remembers Uncle Ed piling all the kids, nieces and nephews into his roomy Dodge convertible to head out to the local A&W drive-in where they were all treated to Edwin's favorite drink, root beer. In 1961 Edwin married Jan Mahlman, helping raise her three children. They later moved to Sacramento, CA, where Edwin worked at Mather Air Force Base painting military aircraft. Jan and Edwin later divorced. In 1977, Edwin married Ida Mae Hoffner-Poffinbarger. They were happily married for 26 years. He was again a major influence in raising children, Ida Mae's daughters, Cookie and Gwennie, and son Doug. Poppi, as he was known to Ida Mae's children, was often seen driving the kids around Sacramento in his same 1960 Dodge convertible, usually on their way to Poppi's favorite A&W eateries for hamburgers, root beer and ice cream. Edwin was a wonderful friend to Ida Mae's favorite nephew, Jimmy Poffinbarger, especially after Ida Mae's death in 2003. Edwin was also a guiding mentor to another favorite nephew, Jay Cink, while living in Valley City. Although Edwin had no children of his own, he was a positive figure in the lives of his three families of children and two nephews, all of whom will hold him in their hearts forever. He was always ready with a selfless attitude, friendly smile and kind heart. Edwin is survived by his three step-children: Douglas and Cookie Poffinbarger and Gwendola Simpson and nine step- grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters-in-law, Clarice and Hulda Cink. Numerous other nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews will miss Edwin dearly, as well as many friends too numerous to mention here. He was preceded in death by his wife Ida Mae, his parents, 11 brothers and sisters, and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service for Edwin will be held on December 7 in Vista, CA. Also, in the Spring, there will be a memorial service for Edwin in Valley City, at Memory Gardens Cemetery. He will rest in peace next to his beloved brothers, Fred and Frank Cink.
