Kearney Hub (NE) - Friday, November 29, 2013 GRAND ISLAND - Betty L. Fowler, 77, of Arcadia died Saturday, Nov. 23, 2013, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island. A celebration of life will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Arcadia United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Jeff D. Hale and the Rev. Marty Robbins officiating. The family will be present from 4-6 p.m. Sunday at Ord Memorial Chapel. The body was cremated. Ord Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements. She was born Aug. 24, 1936, at Burwell to Lee and Evelyn (Hibnes) Johnson. In December 1957, she married Gilbert Fowler. They divorced in 1976. Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Kerry and Kathy of Arcadia, Leonard and Linda of Kearney, Ronald and Melanie of Grand Island and Jay and Kim of Hastings; grandchildren, Zachary Fowler of Aurora and Don Risley and his wife, Tuesday, and Niki Bunker and her husband, Vince, all of Colorado; five great-grandchildren; and brother, Kenneth Johnson of Mead. She was raised in Loup County on the north side of the Calamus River. Betty attended Valley View Country School through the sixth grade and Burwell Public School until the 10th grade. She then transferred to Loup County High School for her junior and senior years and graduated in 1955. During her school years, she acquired the nickname of "Bets." Betty was the school annual editor and was voted the "Most Dependable" of her graduating class. Following high school, Betty taught in rural schools for three years. She and Gilbert had four sons. The family first lived on a ranch west of Taylor until 1970 when they moved to Arcadia. They resided there for two years and moved to Campbell for a short time before returning to Arcadia. Betty continued to make her home in Arcadia where she worked at the Arcadia Café and Rose Lane Nursing Home in Loup City. She also cooked at The Den and Bud's Bar at Comstock. Betty last worked in private-duty home care. Her hobbies included sewing, reading and gardening and she especially enjoyed keeping up on the local news. Betty was a rodeo fan. She followed the PBR and enjoyed watching the National Finals Rodeo on TV. She was preceded in death by her parents. Memorials are suggested to the Arcadia Fire and Rescue Department.
