HASTINGS — Edwin J. "Ed" Klanecky, 88, of Hastings died Sunday, Nov. 17, 2013, at Mary Lanning Hospital in Hastings. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Hastings, with the Rev. Michael Houlihan officiating. Burial will be in the Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Wagner Funeral Home of Central City is assisting the family. Mr. Klanecky was born Aug. 14, 1924, in Sargent to Edward J. and Frances B. (Klanecky) Klanecky. Survivors of the immediate family include his wife, Dorothy of Hastings; two daughters and a son-in-law, Shirley and Don Farlee of Grand Island and Sharon Nolte of Hastings; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Ed graduated from Sargent High School in 1943. He graduated from the University of Nebraska Agriculture College in 1948, with a bachelor of science degree in vocational education. He married Dorothy J. Zajicek on Feb. 7, 1948, in Geneva. He taught vocational agriculture in Sargent between 1948 and 1951. In 1952, Ed and Dorothy moved to a farm by Norman. In 1955 and 1956, Ed taught veteran agriculture in Campbell. In 1960, they moved to Norman and he managed Minden Grain Elevator of Norman for nine years. Ed served on the school board, town board, and township board for eight years. He also played on the softball team there. In 1969, the couple moved to Hastings and he worked for the Nebraska Job Service for 17 years. He retired in 1986 and has been doing a little farming ever since. Ed was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Hastings, St. Michael's Men's Club, Knights of Columbus 1123, and the Eagle's Club 592. He enjoyed bowling and calling bingo. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Evelyn Johnson; and one niece and one nephew. Posted in Obituaries on Monday, November 18, 2013 Grand Island Independent
