Boyd KIA Solomon Is, September 14, 1942 Unit Company A,1st Parachute Battalion, 1st Marine Division, FMF Hometown: Indianapolis, Indiana Brother, Mr. Abe Boyd service# 305453 Awards: World War II Victory Medal, Purple Heart Details of career here The 1st Parachute Battalion was attached to the 1st Marine Division for the invasion of Guadalcanal. The unit departed Norfolk, Virginia on 10 June 1942 aboard the stores ship USS Mizar arriving at Wellington, New Zealand 11 July 1942 On 7 August 1942 the unit conducted an amphibious assault on the small island of Gavutu and later seized the neighboring island of Tanambogo along with other Marine units. The battalion later moved to Guadalcanal, fighting alongside the 1st Marine Raiders in the Tasimboko raid and the Battle of Edson's Ridge. from 12–14 September 1942 The two-day battle on the ridge had cost the 1st Raiders 135 men and the 1st Parachute Battalion 128 . Of those totals, 59 were dead or missing, including 15 parachutists killed in action.
