OBITUARY Former Resident, Melvin Nelson, 69, Dies At Martin, S. D. Melvin Nelson, 69, a former resident of the Comstock community, died unexpectedly at his farm home west of Martin, South Dakota, July 15. Funeral services were held on Monday afternoon at the American Legion Hall in Martin. Burial was in the Martin cemetery. Melvin Theodore Nelson was born in Hamilton County, Nebraska, on February 4, 1896, a son of Victor and Mary Nelson. In 1903, at the age of seven years, he moved with his parents and their family to Custer County where they settled near Comstock. He assisted with the work at the farm and attended the Wescott School. In 1918 he moved to a rented farm where he continued farming operations in the Comstock community. On July 23, 1919, he was married to Helen Westbrook of Comstock. He and his family moved to Bennett County, South Dakota, in 1929, where they settled on a farm four miles west of Martin, where he lived until his death. Melvin was very active in civic and community affairs. He was a member of the Bennett County High School board for 20 years, serving part of the time as president. He had the satisfaction of seeing this school grow from a small four-teacher school to an outstanding high school with 13 teachers. For many years he served on the board of directors of the Bennett County Co-op and also served several years on the Bennett County ASC Committee. He was instrumental in promoting the building of the hospital at Martin. He also helped organize the Farmer's Co-op Grain Association. Melvin's cheerful and friendly personality and his generosity and good will towards everyone made him popular and well-liked. Survivors include his wife, Helen; a daughter Mrs. Elwanda Peterson of Cody; four sons, Lyle, Paul and Gary Dean of Martin and Robert of Fort Collins, Colo.; 19 grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Emma Rousek of Comstock, Mrs. Eldon Lee of Omaha, and Mrs. Alex Olson of Martin; three brothers, Dwight of Martin and Walter and Glen of Comstock.
