Bio

Rev. John W. Visser went to be with his Heavenly Father October 5, 2013. Born April 18, 1917 on a farm near Hull, Iowa, his parents were Peter and Minnie (Vander Kooi) Visser. He attended a one room country school grades 1-8. His high school education continued at Western Christian High in Hull, Iowa. He graduated from Calvin College and Calvin Seminary in Grand Rapids. During his college years he took one year off to teach the children at Hull Christian Grammar school. He was the pastor of churches in Iowa, California, and two in Michigan. He ended his career in social work with the State of Michigan. John married Christine Vellema. They had one son James who was born in 1943. Christine passed away June 17, 1988. He married Louise Klein October 24, 1992. She passed away February 16, 2009. He had two sisters and spouses, Willemina and William Pals and Josephine and Leonard Vogelzang who preceded him in death. Other family members were his step children Douglas and Anne Klein, Jack and Bonnie Dykhouse, James and Nancy Dykhouse, seven nephews, Arnold and Peter Pals, Leonard (deceased), Merrill, Joel, Douglas and Timothy Vogelzang. John lived a full life doing the work of the Lord as a pastor and social worker. He was also a longtime friend to residents at Porter Hills retirement complex where he lived for 18 years. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held 10:30 A.M. Saturday October 19, 2013 at the Meeting House at Porter Hills. Private interment was held at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Porter Hills Benevolent Fund. Visser, Retired Minister, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in all aspects of spiritual services. With a total of 43 years in the ministry, Rev. Visser specializes in family counseling. He and his wife currently reside at a retirement home where he delivers seminars for prayer, performs counseling for the congregation and help people dealing with their frustration over unanswered prayers. Answering a calling from God, he became involved in his profession and attributes his success to his interest in solving problems faced by children and adults. Rev. Visser began his ministry at the Otley Church in Pella, Iowa then moved to a rural church near Grand Rapids. He spent five years in the Zutphen Christian Reformed Church and then moved to California, where he spent five years at the Ripon Christian Reformed Church near San Francisco. In addition to his pastoral duties, he worked as a social worker with children and adults, sick and shut-ins in Michigan for 15 years. A recipient of several awards for his contributions to the community, Rev. Visser was honored by the state of Michigan for Best Special Emphasis on Families and Best Management of Funds. He received his Bachelor of Arts in General Studies from Calvin College and completed coursework in Theology at Calvin Theological Seminary. A former chairman of Hospice of the Western Reserve and member of the Stephen Ministries, he supports the Porter Hills Foundation.
