Mabel Mildred Voss was born April 6, 1913, on a farm near Schuyler to Louis and Lillie (Welch) Voss. She moved to North Bend at age 6 and was a 1930 graduate of North Bend High School. She married the hired hand, Vergil P. Gana on August 3, 1931, in Belleville, Kansas. The couple began their life together on a farm near Lincoln. In 1935, they moved to Fremont with their 2 yr. old daughter Donna. The family then moved to Decatur, Alabama in 1941 with their daughter and 6 mo. old son, Dean, and later moved to Salina, Kansas, where her husband worked as a millwright in a flour mill. They returned to Fremont in 1948 where her husband, Vergil built their home and established his own construction company. The couple loved to entertain, go camping and square dance and teach square dancing to youth in the area. Vergil would call many of these square dances in the basement of their own home. Mabel was a faithful member of Salem Lutheran Church in Fremont. She worked as a cook at Washington Elementary School after the death of her husband, in 1972 until she retired at the age of 70 in 1983. She belonged to many clubs and was admired for her entertaining, cooking, gardening, crocheting, crafts and devoting her life to raising her grandchildren, who admired and loved her dearly.
