Jiři Znamenáček was born February 11, 1897 south of Crete. He was one of thirteen children born to Frank and Anna Znamenacek. Outside of the Czech community, he went by the English translation of his name, George. He graduated in 1915 from Crete High School and attended Doane College and the University of Nebraska. Early in his career George was president of the Farmers Union. Later he went into the Implement business, and later still he and his sons were in the poultry and produce business. He was also a member of the Crete City Council for 10 years. He died after a short illness on Monday, August 27, 1951 at the age of 54 years. His funeral was held at the First Congregational Church on Wednesday afternoon, following which he was buried at Crete Riverside cemetery. He was survived by his wife, Evelyn; four sons, Merlyn, Kenneth, Larry, and George R.; three daughters, Lois (Owens), Nancy, and Jo Ann; two sisters, Nettie (Vetrosky) and Anna (Svoboda); two brothers, Miles and Karel; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Leon; four brothers; and five sisters.
