ORD — Julia Margaret Holmes, 103, of Ord died Saturday, Aug. 24, 2013, at the Community Memorial Health Center in Burwell. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church in Ord. Burial will be in the Ord City Cemetery. Pastor Trever Rook will officiate. Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Holmes was born May 22, 1910, in Garfield County to William and Pauline (Karty) Gregorski. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ivan. Survivors of the immediate family include her six children, Delores and Mervin Hornickel of Ord, Melvin and Arlene Holmes of Grand Island, Evelyn Brown of Kaycee, Wyo., Shirley and Dean Johnson of Fullerton, LaVonne and Jerry Schmitt of Ord and Arlene and Gerald Johnson of Elba; 20 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren. Julia attended country school in Garfield County and graduated from the eighth grade. She helped her dad farm. She was an outdoors person and farming was very important to her. Julia married Ivan Leonard Holmes on Sept. 8, 1932. They enjoyed raising Hereford cattle and farmed to provide for them. Julia and Ivan celebrated 60 years of marriage. Ivan died on May 26, 1993. Julia continued to live on the farm by herself until January of 2013. She enjoyed making quilts, gardening, canning, flowers, chickens, playing cards, fishing and baking pies. Julia was a fabulous cook. Her recipes have been put into a family cook book. Julia also had a special cat named "Blacky." Julia was preceded in death by her parents; husband; four brothers, Felix, Antone, Paul and Tom; and seven sisters, Anna, Lucy, Victoria, Mary, Martha, Prekseda and Helen.
