Bio

Woodrow "Woody" Wilmeth, 90, of Lubbock, came into this world on the bitter cold morning of December 5, 1918 feet first waiting on the country doctor. He was born in Dickens County on one of the many arms of the Caprock that extend out around the West Texas country side. He was a bit of a gypsy, which he inherited from his father. They moved from Monument, N.M. to Ralls, Texas, where the family lived in a covered wagon before moving to a half dugout. As a young boy, Woody helped his father drive cattle across the Llano Estacado from Lea County, N.M. to Crosby County, Texas. Like so many families on the South Plains, they survived the depression by farming and raising their own food. When World War II broke out, he went to California and helped build planes the country needed for the war effort. Returning to Texas, he met and married his help mate for life, Hollyce Harber, on the morning of March 2, 1947. They settled on land in the county of Yoakum and began farming. He started several businesses that included an oil company, café, and hardware store. After retiring in 1989, he and his wife moved to Lubbock, where they lived until his death on June 15, 2009. He was the second of 10 siblings and is survived by his wife, Hollyce; youngest brother, Thorne; three children, Kathleen Cowart, Carolyn Truss, and Bryan Wilmeth; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be held on Thursday, June 18, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. at the Estacado Cemetery, located 6 miles East of Idalou, CR 3900, North 5 miles, East 1 mile. The family will receive friends at Sanders Funeral Home from 5 to 6:30 p.m. today. A procession to the cemetery will be leaving at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday from Sanders Funeral Home.
