Karl Dean Moon was born to C.O. and Fae (Westfall) Moon on March 22, 1939 in Kermit, TX. He died on February 20, 2002 at age 62 after a short battle with cancer. Mr. Moon moved to Hobbs in 1947 with his parents and two younger sisters, graduating from Hobbs High School in 1957. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1957. He served as a ground training instructor until he was discharged in 1961. He worked for Hobbs Gas Co. for five years prior to entering radiologic technology school at Lea Region Hospital and additional training in nuclear radiologic technology at University of Arizona in Tucson. Mr. Moon belonged to several professional organizations, including the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists and Society of Nuclear Medicine. He served in various positions of leadership with the New Mexico Society of Radiologic Technologists. Mr. Moon helped to develop the Nuclear Medicine department at Lea Regional Hospital and served at the "old" and the "new" Lea Regional Hospital. He received the Columbia Lea Regional Medical Center's 1996 First Humanitarian Award on December 17, 1996. After 30+ years of professional service, Mr. Moon retired in January, 1997. Karl was a member of First Baptist Church of Hobbs, NM and a member and board member of the Hobbs Kennel Club. Pastimes included restoring old Corvairs, home improvement projects, planning annual vacations, and visiting with life-long friends, friendships which started upon moving to Hobbs in 2nd grade, continued thru high school, military service and adulthood. At the time of his passing, Karl was survived by his 2nd wife of the home, his two sons and two daughters by his first marriage, three step-children, two sisters and nine grandchildren. He was proceeded in death by his parents and grandparents.
