U.S. ARMY 25 DIVISION, MACHINE GUNNER, WORLD WAR II. EDWARD HORLIVY LAST RITES HELD Edward H. Horlivy was born to Mike Horlivy and Christina Matejka Horlivy on April 12,1916 at Milligan, and passed away on June 15, 1984, at the Fillmore County Hospital in Geneva at the age of 68 years, two months, and two days. He was one of seven children in the family. Ed lived with his parents on a farm east of Milligan until 1921, when the family moved to a farm south of Exeter. In 1927, he moved with his parents to the farm west of Exeter. After the death of his parents, he remained on the farm and farmed with his brother Charles, until they retired and moved into Exeter. Ed entered the service on March 28, 1942. He took his basic training at Camp Roberts, CA. After basic training, he was assigned to the 25th Division as a machine gunner and participated in the campaign of Guadalcanal, Northern Solomon Islands, and Luzon in the Philippines. On January 24, 1945, at San Mauel of the Island of Luzon, he was wounded by sniper fire, and spent 18 months at O'Rileys General Hospital, Springfield, Mo. He was discharged on May 4, 1946, and was given an honorable discharge from the Army on May 7, 1946. He was awarded the Purple Heart, Asiatic Pacific ribbon with three bronze Battle Stars, Silver Star medal, Philippine Liberation ribbon with a bronze star, American Theater ribbon, and a good conduct medal. Ed enjoyed hunting and fishing with his family and friends. He was a member of the Exeter American Legion and also the V.F.W. of Exeter.
