Bio

Wahoo Newspapers (Wahoo, Nebraska) 07 Apr 1927, Thu Page 1 Thomas Zimola Passes On At Advanced Age 95 Years Thomas Zimola, one of the original pioneers who came from Moravia, came here August 15th, 1874. His funeral was largely attended on Monday at St. Wenceslaus Church with burial in St. Frances Cemetery. The deceased was born at Kouty, Moravia, now Czecho-Slovakia, December 22, 1831, and was 95 years, the oldest inhabitant of the community as far as we know. He was in his usual health until Friday, March 25. He came downtown for his customary shave. The day was cold and windy. It is believed he took cold and in his weakened condition he could not withstand the illness following which proved fatal within a week. In Moravia, from whence he came with his family, the family were considered well to do, owning a large tract of land free from royalties. Shortly after arriving here he bought land 2 miles west of Wahoo where a son John now resides and it was here the family were raised. A little frame house was erected, but poorly constructed to withstand the rigor of Nebraska winds and cold. An extremely sad incident in the life of Mr. Zimola was the death and burial of his little daughter Mary. This occurred in the summer of 1875. The little one was brought here an infant of about six months and died on the cheerless homestead. At the time there no priest nearer than Chicago. Reared as devout Catholics and used to the ministrations of the church in the homeland, it may perhaps be imagined with what degree of grief the parents faced the ordeal of laying away their little one with no cemetery in which to place the remains nor religious counselor to guide their way. After deep meditation the family selected a spot only a few rods from the house in which to bury the remains. The grave remains as a monument to pioneer days. a tree stands sentinel over the sleeping from of little Mary. He leaves his widow, 84, one son, John Zimola, and three daughters, Mrs. Antonia Dvorak, Wahoo; Mrs. Mary Koudele, West Point and Mrs. Anna Kralik, Colon. Mrs. Frank Dolezal who died May 1, 1926, was also a daughter. In early life as a young man the deceased served six years in the 6th regiment Austrian tirailleurs, a body of fighting men specially selected for weight and size - all must be six feet or over. All infractions of military law in those days were dealt with by inhuman and drastic penalties. Mr. Zimola often recounted these tales to the present generation who would stand aghast at the cruelties practiced by the old Austrian autocratic government which was swept away by the world war. The funeral was held Monday at 10 a.m. The remains were laid to rest in St. Frances cemetery.
