Area minister Melvin BYRD dies WINGATE - The Rev. Melvin W. BYRD, 75, longtime Baptist minister in the Big Country area, died Tuesday at his home. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home Chapel of Faith, U. S. Highway 277, with the Rev. H. B. TERRY Jr. and Chaplain Charles L. MYERS officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Memorial Park. in Abilene. Born in Bosque County, he moved to the Shep community as a small child and attended school there. He graduated from Hardin-Simmons University and moved from Sweetwater to Wingate in 1980. A Baptist minister from 1934 to 1983, he was the pastor of Hawley Baptist Church, First Baptist Church of Lueders, Temple Baptist Church (now Lytle South Baptist Church) for 16 years, Hopewell Baptist near Coleman, Nolan Baptist Church for 10 years, South Side Baptist Church, Winters and Highland Baptist Church, Sweetwater. He was the first president of the board for Lueders Baptist Encampment and served as moderator for District 17 of the Sweetwater Baptist Association. He also served on the board of Baptist General Convention of Texas and held many offices in the Runnels Baptist Association. After his retirement, he was interim pastor for many churches in the area. He was a member of the South Side Baptist Church and the Masonic Lodge No. 853 in Stamford. He was the widower of Beth King BYRD. Survivors include two daughters, Judy (Mrs. Ronald) SMITH and Jeanne (Mrs. Calvin) TISCHLER of Abilene; a brother, Oran BYRD of Granbury; four sisters, Lorene (Mrs. Ed) KINARD of Wingate, Juanita (Mrs. W. Lem) RAY of Abilene, Chick (Mrs. Ray) BRANNON of Fort Worth and Billye (Mrs. Mason) POLK of Levelland; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to the donor's favorite charity. The family will be at home of Mrs. Lem RAY, Route 5, Abilene. Abilene Reporter-News (Abilene, TX) - Friday, October 13, 1989
