Mrs. D.B. McMillan, age 76, passed away at the family home here Thursday morning, August 4, at 7:30 o'clock following an illness which had extended over a period of five months. Services were held at 2:30 o'clock Friday afternoon from the First Baptist church with Rev. L.E. Strickland in charge. He was assisted by Rev. P.T. Ramsey of the Methodist church. Prior to the sermon and tribute paid by Rev. Strickland, a selected choir offered favorite hymns of deceased and Rev. Curtis Smith, a grandson, sung "Holy and Beautiful City." Following the rites at the church the remains, accompanied to Oak Lawn Cemetery by a large circle of relatives and friends, were laid to rest in the family plot beneath a bank of beautiful flowers. As a final tribute, members of the Order of Eastern Star circled the grave and gently dropped sprays of evergreen fern, then formed a semi-circle and sang, "Jesus Savior, Pilot Me." Mrs. McMillan was stricken ill last spring. She was taken to the Temple sanitarium where the report was given that an enlarged heart had developed. Since that time she had been confined to bed at her home. Under the able care and faithful administration of her family physician, Dr. T.S. Barkley , everything that could possibly benefit was done. Georgia Alpha Knight, born June 16, 1862, in Desota, Clark county, Miss., was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Albert Knight. After the Civil War at the age of eight, she with her parents and sister, Joe, left their large plantation and some one hundred and fifty slaves to come to Texas. They settlled a few miles southeast of Rockdale. Deceased lived sixty-eight years in and near Rockdale with the exception of a few years spent in Belton Texas. Mrs. McMillan often related that when she first came to this section there was still plenty of wild game and Indians in the timbered places that is now the city of Rockdale. She met in celebration with the crowds to witness the first train to come into Rockdale and saw the clearing of timber and the place gradually grow into a town. At the age of sixteen, she was married to Elias Morris, who was also from Clark county, Miss. To this union was born a son and five daughters. Following the death of Mr. Morris, she later married David Bryan McMillan. To this union were born four daughters and three sons. At the age of nine years, Mrs. McMillan united with the Baptist church and up until a few years ago, when her health begun to fail, she was a constant attendant. . . . She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and was faithful in filling her place as an officer. She was a quiet reserved person, a good citizen who took pride in home-building and beautifying. She was happiest when having her devoted children gather around the home fires for reunions and rejoicing. . . . Pall bearers were: J.E. Cooke , W.E. Gaither , M.N. Stricker , T.B. Ryan , H.L. Fieseler , W.T. Ramsel . Rockdale Reporter , August 1938 . . . . . . . . . .
