In the passing, at an early hour Wednesday, August 22, of Frank Vodehnal of Ord, Valley County loses one of its oldest settlers and best citizens. He numbered his friends by those who knew him, and in passing, is mourned, not only by those many friends but by a large family of stalwart sons and their families. Mr. Vodehnal was born in Bohemia February 9, 1846 and died at his home in Ord following a two weeks sickness, August 22, 1934 at about 2:30 a.m. He was married to Miss Anna Janda in Bohemia October 28, 1872. Four years later they came to the United States, living in Tama, Iowa and in 1880 they settled in Valley county. He was a farmer all his life. His good wife passed away a few years ago. The family lived on their fine farm west of Ord until March, 1920, when they moved to Ord and this has been the family home since. Mr. Vodehnal was 88 years, 6 months and 13 days old at the time of his death. The remains were taken to the Frazier Mortuary and prepared for burial and friends may view them there until the time of the funeral, which will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, August 24 from the Bohemian Hall. Rev. Philipi will officiate at the funeral and burial will be made in the Bohemian cemetery beside the wife who preceded him. Mr. Vodehnal is survived by his five sons, Frank, John, Henry, Emil of Valley country and James who lives near Burwell. There are 25 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. One son, Joseph, died in 1905 and the only daughter of the family, Emma, died at the age of 10 years, in 1897. Frank Vodehnal was of a jolly disposition, a great visitor, liked his friends and was a good neighbor. He was a kind husband and father and a good provider. It is only in the very recent years, that the infirmities of old age have made it impossible for him to mingle with his former friends as he always did and they are all glad to remember him as he was for more than fifty years after coming to this country. He is just another of the good, old early settlers, gone to his final reward.
