Bio

Barbara Katherine Galzenlichter-Tuscher was born in South Russia of German parents on September 27, 1870. She grew into womanhood, met a young carpenter named John Tuscher; who was born on October 5, 1865 in Odessa, Russia, and they married on February 6, 1890. Barbara and John were blessed with twelve children, seven boys and five girls. They were: Barbara, Jennie, Steve, Mary Ann, Magdalena, Rose, Micheal, John, Danial, Felix, and Joseph. Two years after getting married and after much thought, Barbara and John departed for America, leaving many friends and relatives behind. Knowing that many of these loved ones would never be seen again, they sailed for America. Like so many others before them, they made their way to the Dakota's. They arrived in the United States of America on May 25, 1892. They got to Ipswich, South Dakota by rail along with other immigrants that were looking for a new way of life. In the spring of 1900, the Tuscher family moved six miles east and a half mile north of Ipswich. They built a two room sodhouse. In 1903 they moved a half mile west of their sodhouse and built a new wooden house. Being a carpenter, John did most of the work with some help from Barbara. They lived there until 1918. Barbara found time to help others. She became a mid-wife and assisted the doctors many times delivering babies. There were many times she was called upon to deliver a child alone with only the help of the father or an older child in the family. "Grandma Tuscher" as Barbara was known to many in the surrounding community, saw 288 babies come into the world with her help; and one was a grand-daughter. She was in her late 70's when she delivered the last baby; her great-grandson, Ervin Hammrich, now of Mobridge, South Dakota. All this; with her own family, Barbara still accompanied the doctors when they made their house calls out in the countryside. The flu and pneumonia took its toll each year. Thus, many times she stayed with the sick, spending days and nights sitting with a sick child, so a mother could get some much needed rest. While Barbara was away from home, John and the children kept the home fires burning. There were times when a grateful family would drop off a small pig or some meat to pay Barbara for her services. Barbara Katherine Galzenlichter-Tuscher passed away in the summer of 1957, at the age of 86 years. She was sadly missed by all. The neighborhood children were lost without her. Her little house was vacant but still some little visitors could be seen sitting on the door steps. Barbara Tuscher once remarked that she was truly a rich woman, because God blessed her with a wonderful family of children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and so many-friends.
