William Sherman Gray was born on 03 Jan 1864 in Illinois and was one of 2 males & 4 females born to Rev. David Gray & Maria(h) Bolds Gray. In 1860 the David Gray family lived in Cumberland County, Illinois and in 1870 that same family including, our subject, William Sherman Gray lived in Fayette County, Illinois. Where exactly the family was living at the time of our subject's birth in 1864 is not known, but it is surmised that he was born in either Cumberland County or Fayette County of Illinois. William Sherman Gray married in Jackson County, Illinois on 11 Oct 1885 to Sarah Jane Jacobs, daughter of John Wesley Jacobs & Meriah Tope Jacobs, all of Jackson County. To them were born 6 children, 4 girls and 2 boys. Of these children only 1 boy and 1 girl survived and married to have children of their own. William Sherman Gray was a Coal Miner by trade.
