Bio

WOOD RIVER - G. Richard "Dick" McDonald, 88, of Wood River died Tuesday morning at a Grand Island hospital. Services will be Friday at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Wood River. The Rev. Bernard Berger will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Cemetery in Grand Island. Visitation will be Thursday from 5-8 p.m. at Apfel Funeral Home in Wood River with a rosary at 7:30. Memorials are suggested to the Lutheran Memorial Hospital Scholarship Fund. Mr. McDonald was born Jan. 12, 1892, at Boelus, the son of William and Nancy Archer McDonald. He attended Soulville School near Boelus and Grand Island Baptist College. He entered the U.S. Army in 1916, serving in the Medical Corps. On June 1, 1921, he married Rose Kastl at Grand Island. They farmed in Howard and Sherman counties. In 1940 they moved to a farm near Wood River and had made their home there since then. He was a member of St. Mary's parish in Wood River and was affiliated with the Platt-Deutsche Society in Grand Island. Survivors include his widow; four sons, Charles and Francis, both of Phillips, Richard of Flagstaff, Ariz., and Joseph of Tulsa, Okla.; three daughters, Mrs. Joseph (Patricia) Cannizzaro of Albany, N.Y., Mrs. Joe (Joan) Muhvic of Phillips and Mrs. Jayu (Barbara) Lutey of Omaha; 26 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren' two brothers, Byron of Loup City and Roger of Hastings, and three sisters, Joyce Eilenstine of Grand Island, Lucy Bochkora of Wood River and Elizabeth Elvers of Omaha.
