Peter Fitzhugh was born 28 May 1760 in Bedford County, Virginia, British Colonial America. Peter was the son of Robert Fitzhugh Sr and Margaret Bell Fitzhugh. He married Nancy Dawson on 27 June 1785 in Bedford County Virginia, also born in Bedford County and died about 1883 in Clay County, Missouri. She was the daughter of John Dawson and Susan Wood Dawson. Peter was a participant in the “Battle of Guilford Courthouse” on 15 Mar 1781 in Guilford, North Carolina during the American Revolution. Peter and Nancy had ten children; George W. Fitzhugh 1790, John Thomas Fitzhugh 1792, Patsy Martha Fitzhugh (Forrister) 1792, Nancy T Fitzhugh (Dawson) 1794, Robert Fitzhugh 1797, Elizabeth Ann ‘Betsy’ Fitzhugh (McPherson) 1798, Margaret Fitzhugh 1800, Gabriel Fitzhugh 1801, Solomon Fitzhugh, Polly ‘Mary’ Fitzhugh (Moutrey) 1806. Peter, his brothers and father are listed in the 1787 Census for Bedford County Property Tax. In January 1797, Peter sold Bartlett Gaskins 100-acres on Stony Fork of the Otter River in Bedford County that was part of 248-acres granted to Peter by patent in 1794. On 28 August 1797, Peter deeded a tract of 140-acres in Bedford County to John Boise for 40-pounds. Soon after, the Fitzhugh families moved to Logan County, Kentucky. Robert Fitzhugh Sr., his children and their families are found after 1797 in Logan County, Kentucky. Peter, Nancy and family are farmers in the 1810 census in Logan County. Peter served as a soldier in the War of 1812, as did his brother John Thomas Fitzhugh. There are “War of 1812” medallions on each of their gravesites. Peter died 8 February 1828 in Logan County, Kentucky. His will was probated 3 March 1828 in Logan County, Kentucky left his estate to Nancy and their children, and the executor being son Gabriel Fitzhugh. “To my loving wife Nancy, all my personal goods and ample support from my estate during her life. To son George improvements he made on one-half of my claim containing 78 acres. To son John the remaining half of said claim including his improvements. To daughter Mary ‘Polly’ Moutrey, 40-acres that run parallel with the upper-end of my farm. To Gabriel and Solomon, the balance of 80-acres.” Peter is buried at Red River Meeting House Cemetery located in Adairville, Logan County, Kentucky. His headstone is inscribed "In memory of Peter Fitzhugh, who was born May 8th 1760, dec'd February 8th 1828". Fitzhugh is an English Anglo-Norman surname originating central England. It is patronymic as the prefix Fitz- derives from the Latin filius, meaning “son of”. Hugh is a given name.
