Married November 4, 1879 in Abie, Nebraska to Veronica Riha. ***This letter was written by Anton in Czech and we have translated it. Written in David City, Nebraska, on the 24 December, 1915. Because we don't know the day nor the hour of the moment we'll be called by God to leave this tearful purgatory. I've decided to leave some lines, to let our descendants (survivors) know the origins of their parents. I, father, was born on 2 January 1853 in the village Bačkovice, a village belonging to parish of Dešná in the district of Jemnice, in Moravia. My wife was born in 1860 here in the United States, Spillville, Winneshiek County, Iowa. We have moved to Nebraska in 1874. I have married my wife on the November 4th, 1879. In 1876, I searched for a new homeland, my own farm and I found it - 80 acres of land. The quality of the land wasn't first class but I was absolutely satisfied. Before I entered the state of marriage I had worked for my parents for about 5 years and I received an oxcart for a pair of oxes, the one most commonly used in the Czech lands. My wife had brought with her a cow from her parents and a set of tools we urgently needed. And so, with a help/aid/assistance/patronage of God, we have begun. We both have done everything we could and our homestead/farm flourished. We are so well that now we remember these past times joyously. Eight children came out of our marriage but two of them, about the age of 6, have died. Six of these children, at the time I am writing this letter, are still alive. I don't know what I should remark besides of a prayer unto you -to remember us after our death and to behave well to leave our name a good reputation, because that's all that a man leaves behind.
