Bio

Martin Charles Vodehnal, 84 beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, passed away peacefully at the Grand Island Veterans Home on April 5, 2013. There will be no services at this time. Celebration of life and burial of ashes will be at a later date. Martin was born on the family farm southwest of Ord, Neb., on Oct 8, 1928. He was the youngest of 11 children born to John and Frances (Ptacnik) Vodehnal. He is survived by his wife, Joan; daughter Theresa (Resa) Reed of Grand Island; son, Brant, and daughter-in-law, Robin, of Hastings; granddaughter, Jill (Runcie) Eickhoff and husband, Chad, of Kearney; grandson, Scott Runcie of Seward; great-grandsons, Riley Runcie and Emmet Eickhoff; sister, Val White of Wallingford, Conn.; and brother, Lloyd Vodehnal of Grand Island. His early childhood was spent on the farm near Ord where he attended Cottonwood School. He moved with his family to a farm near Palmer in 1939, then to a farm northeast of Grand Island where he attended District 56 school and Grand Island Senior High. Martin served in The United States Army from November 1950 to October 1952 with the 2nd Armored Division, 48th Medical Battalion in Germany. During his time in the service he developed lifelong friendships and enjoyed attending his Army reunions. On Nov 11, 1956, he was united in marriage to Joan McKay at Trinity United Methodist Church in Grand Island, Neb. They made their home and raised their family in Grand Island. He was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church; the Platt-Duetsche; past member of the Eagles; Life member and past Commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1347. Martin enjoyed camping, traveling, working with the Boy Scouts, gardening, Big Red football, square dancing, his grandchildren and visiting with family and friends. Martin worked for Beatrice Foods for 25 years and Commercial Bank for 12 years before retiring. Martin was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Elizabeth Volf, Martha Lawell, Lorraine Levitt, Stacia Clark and Olga Kneeland; and brothers, August, Paul and Otto Vodehnal.
