Private First Class Gustof H. Hins (service number 37163771) was born on May 13, 1914, in North Dakota, the son of Russian immigrants Gottlieb and Fredrika Hins, and was raised in a large farm family in Stutsman County. Growing up in rural Flint Township, he received a limited formal education and entered the workforce early, later working as a railroad laborer while living in Medina, North Dakota. During World War II, he entered the U.S. Army and was assigned to Company H, 36th Engineer Combat Regiment, a frontline unit that supported infantry operations under fire in the Mediterranean Theater. Serving in North Africa and later in Italy, PFC Hins performed the dangerous and essential duties of a combat engineer, clearing obstacles and operating in exposed areas during active combat. On October 10, 1943, during the Italian Campaign, he was mortally wounded by artillery shell fragments and crushing injuries sustained in battle, and he died at age 29. For wounds received as a direct result of enemy action, he was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. PFC Hins is buried at the Sicily–Rome American Cemetery in Nettuno, Italy, with a cenotaph in Medina Cemetery, North Dakota, and is remembered as a hardworking North Dakota farm boy whose life was cut short while faithfully serving his country.
