This obituary was contibuted by the Mazeppa Journal to the Wabasha County Herald, in which it appeared on May 24, 1928. John Hilger, An Old Resident, Passes Away John Hilger, one of the old and respected residents of Mazeppa, died at 10 o'clock Wednesday morning. Mr. Hilger was stricken with paralysis several weeks ago, and had since been in a critical condition. The first of this week he began to fail rapidly and it was seen that the end could not be far away. Mr. Hilger was born in Luxembourg, Aug. 28, 1850. At the age of four he came to the United States with his parents, settling in Bellevue, Ia. On Sept. 25, 1871 he was married to Mary Wagner. They moved to Mazeppa in June, 1878, and this was their home until their death{s}. Mr. Hilger was in business here for many years, retiring some time ago. He filled many public offices, such as assessor, and councilman, and took a prominent part in church affairs, serving at his death as secretary of St. Peter's Benevolent Society. Mrs. Hilger passed away on June 17, 1914. Surviving the deceased are the following children; Michael, Dan, Alexander, and Mrs. Geo. Sand, Mazeppa, Mrs. Jake Huberty, Pine Island; Dr. W. M. Hilger, Iona; George, Minneapolis; John, Wabasha; and William, Chippewa Falls, Wis. Another son, Nicholas, passed away a few years ago and another child was lost in infancy. A sister Mrs. Barbara Schwirtz, lives at Bellevue, Ia. The funeral will be held at St. Peter and Paul's church in this village Saturday morning at 10, with interment in the church cemetery. Mr. Hilger will be missed. He was one of the best known residents of Mazeppa for exactly 50 years. He commanded the respect of those who knew him. Quiet in his ways, he yet made many friends who esteemed him, and his going will be lamented and regretted not merely by his children and grandchildren, but by the community as a whole.
