John Dewitt Greer Died of disease in service Mechanic AEF Air Services, 677th Aero Squadron, World War l Greer was born February 2, 1888, in Anna, Collin County the son of John and Laura Greer. His father was the was the founder of the town of Anna. Greer registered for the Army in June 1917 joining as a mechanic in the 677th Aero Squadron American Expeditionary Forces Air Service. Aviation had proved its utility in wars, not only including airplanes but observation balloons. In preparation to be transported to France to begin his service, Greer was admitted to the Embarkation Hospital, Camp Stuart, Newport News, Virginia. He had contracted cerebral spinal meningitis and died February 5, 1918, at age 30. His funeral service was held at the Baptist Church in Anna on February 9, 1918.
