John F. Greer, founder of the town of Anna, was one of 8 children of Joseph Greer, a planter. In 1870 John settled at Old Mantua and operated a farm there for several years. In 1878 he went back to Alabama and married Laura Ellis. With the coming of the railroad Mantua was moved from its location to a more convenient one on the railroad. John F. had the first house in the new town of Anna and was always a leader in helping to develop the town. He operated the first store in Anna, served as its mayor, postmaster, and in his private life was a member of the Presbyterian Church and a Mason. John and Laura reared eleven children - six sons and five daughters. Their daughter Anna Lou was the first child born in the new town of Anna and she was given its name.
