Bio

Enoch Ruff was about twenty-four when he married Nancy Owensby about 1827 in North Carolina. The 1830 census revealed they were living in Rutherford County, North Carolina. Household members: Enoch (20-29), Nancy (20-29), two males (under 5). Their known children: William Joseph Ruff (b.1827 d.1900) Richard Reuben Ruff (b.1829-1892) Martha Ruff (b.1835) Elizabeth Ruff (b.1837) Wiley Ellis Ruff (b.1839 d.1900) George Ruff (b.1845) Nancy died sometime between 1845 and when Enoch married in 1849. Enoch Ruff was about forty-one and Mary Lawther was about twenty-six when they married about 1849 in North Carolina. The 1850 census revealed Enoch was a farmer and they lived in Polk, Rutherford County, North Carolina. Enoch was born in South Carolina and Mary was born in North Carolina. Mary could not read or write. His three children and three grandchildren were living with them. Household members: Enoch Ruff (40), Mary (28), Martha (15), Elizabeth (13), Wiley (11), George Ruff (5), John Latter (7), Walter Latter (4), Nancy Latter (2) and Emily Ruff (10/12). The 1860 census revealed Enoch was a wheel wright and they lived in Cooper Gap, Polk County, North Carolina. Their two grandchildren were living with them. Household members: Enoch Ruff (55), Mary (40), Elendor (8), Jessee (5), Narcissa (1), Elias Laughter (15) and Louisa Laughter (14). The 1870 census revealed Enoch was a farmer, their real estate value was $120 and personal estate value was $130. They lived in Township 3, Polk County, North Carolina. Household members: Ennach Ruff (64), Mary (43), Mariah (16), Jesse (13), Dara M. (7) and Enoch F. (6). Their known children: Emily Ruff (b.1850)DY Elendor Mariah Ruff (Searcy)(b.1853 d.1930) Jessee Ruff (b.1853 d.1923) Narcissa Dasas Ruff (Laughter) (b.1859 d.1925) Dora Ann Ruff (b.1861 d.1925) Enoch Franklin Ruff (b.1864 d.1925) They had been married about thirty-two years when Enoch died in 1878. Enoch lived to age 73.
