Bio
KING, Barbara E. "Nani," of Tampa, went home to be with the Lord January 18, 2006. She lived her life dedicated to restoring hope and self esteem to learning disabled children. She knew it was as much about the loving as the learning. She was born in 1933 in Gadsden, Ala., and moved in 1950 to Tampa, where she graduated from Hillsborough High School in 1951. While attending the University of Tampa, she met her life long love, Gene King, while he was playing football at UT. She earned her master's degree from the University of South Florida, and later came back to USF as a professor in the education department. Barbara opened her own business in 1986, "Barbara King's Centre for Educational Services." She served as the president of the Florida branch of the International Dyslexia Association. She served on the board of education for the St. Lawrence School in Tampa. She was a member of the Hall of Fame and Outback Bowl entertainment committee since 1985. She is survived by her husband "Coach" Gene King; their three children, Bruce King, Alan King and Vicki Rivas; five grandsons, Ryan, Garrett, Brent, Brad and Austin; and three great-grandchildren, Jaidelyn, Kai and Braylen. She would also tell you that her "family" included all of her students. Barbara had been a member of the St. Lawrence Catholic Church for many years. Her life will be celebrated at noon Saturday at St. Lawrence Catholic Church, 5221 N. Himes Ave., with family receiving friends 10 a.m.-noon at the church. Interment will follow at Garden of Memories Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Gene King, Alan King, Rick Rivas, Bruce King, Garrett Rivas, Ryan Rivas and Austin King. In lieu of flowers, please make any contributions to Barbara King's scholarship fund to St. Lawrence Catholic School at 5221 N. Himes Ave., Tampa, FL 33614, or Carrollwood Day School, 1515 W.
