Bio

Letha Jean (Pohl) Jorgensen, age 74, or Exeter passed away Thursday evening, May 29,2008 at the York General Hospital from complications of multiple myeloma and renal failure. She was born the third of six children and the only daughter to Theodore and LeoNora (Kohtz) Pohl of rural Gresham on October 16, 1933. She was baptized and confirmed in the Zion Lutheran Church of Thayer with early school days including country school, Zion Lutheran School, Benedict and graduation from Thayer High School in 1951. Going with her older brothers to dances on Saturday nights gave her the chance to meet Kenneth D. Jorgensen of Exeter and they were married on December 16, 1951. Within weeks, the couple left for Kenneth's basic training for the Army, which included living in Texas. While Kenneth served in Japan, Letha lived with his parents and worked as a waitress in the local café. After Kenneth's discharge, the couple farmsteaded north of Exeter in York County and raised livestock and farmed. Letha was known for her delicious meals, lovely flower gardens and her huge vegetable gardens every summer. She was a member of the Up & Atom Extension Club, taught Sunday school at the United Church of Christ in Exeter, and served many years on the West Blue Election Board. She never missed a York or Seward County Fair when her sons or grandchildren were exhibiting livestock. Letha joined the United Church of Christ in March of 2006 while recovering from radiation and chemotherapy at the Hearthstone in York. She returned to the farm in April 2006 and was able to be a part of her grandchildren's graduations in 2006 and 2008. She is survived by her sons Kelvin D. and Marsha Jorgensen of Exeter and Kent D. and Ronda Jorgensen of Giltner; grandchildren Kellen D. and Klaire M. Jorgensen of Exeter; brothers Dale and Sharon Pohl and Wilfred and Norma Pohl both of York; and Norman and Barbara Pohl of Eden, Idaho; and a multitude of Pohl-Kohtz-Reetz-Haberman-Weiss cousins along with Kenneth's cousins which include Ruhls-Jones-Guthries-Rutherfords-Michls and Condons. Preceding her in death were her parents; and infant brother; brother Raymond; and her husband Kenneth on May 7, 2007. Visitation will be at Farmer Funeral Home in Exeter on Tuesday June 3 from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Private family graveside services will be held Wednesday June 4 followed by a public memorial service at 11 a.m. at the United Church of Christ in Exeter. Lunch will follow at the Exeter American Legion, prepared by the UCC Women and everyone is invited to attend. Memorials are directed to the family to be designated at a later date.
