Bio

Appointed 1st Lieutenant and enrolled in the Missouri State Militia on January 18, 1862, by Willard P. Hall, acting Gov. of the State of Mo. on the basis of integrity, patriotism and ability. He was 53 years old. He was mustered in on February 5th at Macon City, MO, into Capt. York's Mounted Rifle Co. This organization subsequently became Troop B, 11th Missouri State Militia Cavalry. About July 1, 1862, his company, under the command of Major (afterward Col.) Rogers, engaged in a skirmish at Downing. This place is located on the Keokuk & Western Railway in Schuyler Co., near its eastern line. The place was called Cherry Grove, and the fight was known as "The Skirmish at Cherry Grove". The engagement took place between the 2nd Squadron of the 11th and a portion of Col. Joe Porter's confederate troops. In this engagement, the latter was defeated with a loss of 4 men killed. The Federals lost one man--Capt. York of Troop B, who was mortally wounded and died a few days thereafter at Memphis, Scotland Co., MO. It was also on that day that Lieut. Scobee suffered a gunshot wound in his left wrist and his horse reportedly had its ears shot off. It is possible that Lt. Scobee received a battlefield commission upon the death of Capt. York, as he was later known as Capt. Scobee, however no official record of the promotion has been found. According to the troop muster roll, he was present from enrollment till April 30, 1862; on detached service May through September; and a patient in the hospital at Macon City. He was mustered out at Palmyra, Mo., on Oct. 1, 1862. After his return from the service he owned and operated a livery stable. He was a member of the Masons.
