Leonard Emil Stanislav age 88 crossed over on February 16, 2013 at Pleasant View Care Center in Whiting, Iowa. Funeral mass will be held at 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, February 20, 2013 at St. John's Catholic Church in Onawa, Iowa with Father Patrick O'Kane, celebrant. Gary Linder will give voice to "Ave Maria," "Oh Lord I Am Not Worthy," "Holy God We Praise Thy Name," and guests will sing "Song of Farewell." Lou Hewitt will accompany the soloist. Burial will follow in the Belvidere Cemetery in rural Turin, Iowa. Visitation will be held 5:00 â€" 8:00 P.M. Tuesday, February 19, 2013 with a scriptural wake service at 7:00 P.M. followed by the rosary by Knights of Columbus at the Rush Family Chapel in Onawa. Arrangements are by Rush Family Care Service in Onawa. Casket bearers will be Dan Stanislav, Gary Addy, Terry Pekarek, Rick Stanislav, Larry Framke, and Gary Ellis. Honorary bearers will be Frank Sabatka, Ray Summerfield, Charlie Richardson, Kenneth Richardson, Kenny Stangel, Herald Meyer, Pete Mortensen, Jim Stangel, Dennis Simpson, and Jim Stangel. He was born on December 13, 1924 at Valparasio, Nebraska to Charles Joseph and Agnes Inez (Meduna) Stanislav. He was christened on December 21, 1924 at Saint John's Catholic Church in Valparasio, sponsors being John and Gertrude Stanislav, and has remained a devout Catholic all of his life. In 1929 his parents made the decision to seek better land, so the decision to relocate in Iowa came to be. Travel was by Ferry over the Missouri River along with their machinery to work the soil that fall. In the spring of 1930 other Stanislav families were among the first to cross into Iowa by way of the new Blair Bridge with their possessions. Leonard then lived on the Monona-Harrison county line. His elementary education was obtained by attending the school Sherman Township #6, later graduating from the same. It was here his friends helped him learn the English language and the Czechoslovakian language was left behind. He enjoyed his school years and the friends he made there through out his life. In 1940 he moved to Hornick, Iowa, where they were able to secure more land, hard times and too much rain forced a move to Sloan in 1945. It was here the family was flooded out and the decision made to leave farming forever which resulted in them moving to Sioux City in 1946. However farming remained his true passion all his life. On November 27, 1947 he married Emma Lou Wagner of Turin, Iowa at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Sioux City with Father Edward Hoffman officiating. Bernice Stanislav and Jack Fitzpatrick as witnesses. They made their home in Onawa. In 1949 he was invited to join the firm of Stangel Bro's. After his first 25 years he was honored with a party and given a gold watch. After 50 years they gave the family a dinner at the Country Club with program, gifts and memories that lasted forever. He has been a member of St. Bernard's Parish in Blencoe, St. Phillips in Hornick, St. John's of Onawa. He was a 3rd degree Knights of Columbus, Catholic Order of Forresters, and Holy Name Society. In his youth he served as an alter boy and later as usher where ever needed. Leonard was one of these rare people who could fix anything, whether a car or something at home, he loved his garden, and though work it was, to him it was relaxation and pleasure. He enjoyed various activities with his children and their school functions. His scouting years with Leon were fond memories. He enjoyed camping, traveling, 4-H days as a youth, and all church activities and watching his children progress in life. His retirement years kept him busy as ever much to his enjoyment he helped anyone every way he could. Always the provider and protector. Even at the home helped with residents as he could by his words and the fact he cared. He enjoyed helping staff if he could. In May of 2012 his health started to fail and he later entered Pleasant View Care Center in Whiting, Iowa where he passed over.
