Grand Island Daily Independent Monday 1 November 1948 William Gerbig, Retired Railroad Employee, Dies. In Failing Health three Years; funeral To Be Held Wednesday William Gerbig, 75, a retired employee of the Union Pacific railroad, died yesterday morning in a Kearney hospital. He had been in failing health for the past three years and had been critically ill the last four days. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon in the Livingston-Sonderman funeral home by the Rev. H. D. Champlin, pastor of the Assembly of God church. Burial will be in Grand Island cemetery. Mr. Gerbig, a native of Hamburg, Germany, was born on Nov. 2, 1872. His father (Peter) died during his early childhood. when he was 11 years old, he and his mother came to this community. Sometime later, Mrs. Gerbig married Henry Lilienthal, a member of one of Hall county's early families. Mr. Gerbig and Miss Clara Beberniss were married in Grand Island on Feb. 24, 1900 (Hall County marriage book 6, p. 535.) They began their home on a farm in Merrick county. Later they farmed in Hall county. In December 1919, they sold their farm and came into Grand Island to make their home. In 1922 Mr. Gerbig entered the employ of the Union Pacific railroad in the local shops. He retired in 1937. On March 21, 1941, he and Mrs. Grace Weesner were married at North Platte. Mr. and Mrs. Gerbig had made their home in Kearney since that time. Mr. Gerbig is survived by his wife; four children, Mrs. Roscoe Thompson, south Pasadena, Cal.; Mrs. R. W. Muirhead and William Gerbig, both of Grand Island, and Lawrence Gerbig, Bremerton, Wash.; two sisters, Mrs. Paula Becker, Berlin, Germany, and Mrs. William Wiese, Cairo, and three grandchildren. He was preceeded in death by three brothers, Henry, Detlef and Willie Lilienthal and two sisters, Mrs. Tina Schaaf and Miss Laura Lilienthal. Friends may call from 7 to 9 o'clock Tuesday evening at the Livingston-Sonderman funeral home.
