GRAND ISLAND, Nebraska— Syrinus "Dick" Emmons, age 87, a retired farmer and restaurant operator died Tuesday night in a Grand Island, Nebraska, hospital following an illness of three weeks. He had been in the hospital only one day. Death was attributed to his advanced years. Funeral services were conducted at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday afternoon in the Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home by the Rev. Alton O. Kaul, pastor of the Presbyterian Church. Burial was in the Grand Island Cemetery. Syrinus Richard Emmons was born at Springfield, Indiana, on February 9, 1861, to Henry and Elizabeth Emmons. When he was a young man, he came to Nebraska. After spending a short time farming in York County, Nebraska, he went to St. Paul, Nebraska, and began farming near there. On February 24, 1889, Syrinus Richard Emmons and Miss Ida Tolles were married at St. Paul, Nebraska. They began their home on a farm near St. Paul. Later they resided in Gage Valley, at Archer, and at Palmer, and then returned to St. Paul. They later lived at Comstock and at Shelton, operating a cafe in Shelton. In 1937, they retired and came to Grand Island to make their home. On February 24, 1939, Mr. and Mrs. Emmons observed their golden wedding anniversary. Mrs. Emmons died on August 14, 1944. Mr. Emmons was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Grand Island. He no longer maintained social affiliations. Syrinus Richard Emmons is survived by four children, Bert Emmons, Elm Greek; Lowell Emmons, Kearney; Fred Emmons, Kansas City, Kansas; and Mrs. W. A. Crabtree, Grand Island; 11 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Besides his wife, and parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Mrs. Myrtle Bishop; his three brothers, Henry Emmons Jr.; John Emmons; and George Emmons; and his only sister, Mrs. Theresa Headley.
