Alvina J. Stoddard Dec 11, 1931-Feb 8, 2013 Alvina J. Stoddard, 81, of Gering, died Friday, Feb. 8, 2013 at her home surrounded by her family. Her funeral service will be held Feb. 12, at the First United Methodist Church in Scottsbluff. Interment will precede the funeral service at West Lawn Cemetery in Gering. Alvina was born Dec. 11, 1931 in Scottsbluff to Jake and Marie(Dietz)Gross. She grew up and received her education here, graduating from Scottsbluff High School with the class of 1950. Alvina attended Scotts Bluff Junior College, and on June 3, 1951, she married E. Earl "Bud" Stoddard. Twenty-five days later, Bud entered the military service and the couple was stationed in Petersburg, Va. until 1953 when they returned to Scottsbluff. Alvina raised her family in Gering, where she later worked as a drapery seamstress for Probert's Upholstery. Subsequently, she worked for 10 years as a receptionist at Congresswoman Virginia Smith's Scottsbluff office and later at Bluff's Pharmacy.She was a longtime and very active member of First United Methodist Church in Scottsbluff, where, for many years, she was responsible for coordinating weddings, teas, and receptions at the church. In her own words, she never let the grass grow under her feet. She volunteered at the church office and the hospital gift shop, in addition to participating in the Hospital Auxiliary and the United Methodist Women. For many years, she was an active supporter of Oregon Trail Days events. She enjoyed and was very skilled at sewing, quilting, baking, playing bridge, and nudging others toward their full potential.Survivors include her husband E. Earl "Bud" Stoddard of Gering, daughters Linda Fowler of Scottsbluff, Susan (and Gary) Lofing of Minatare and Sara (and Ward) Krichau of Scottsbluff; her brothers Don (and Linda) Gross of Scottsbluff, Jerald Gross of Missouri, Allen (and Elizabeth) Gross of Grant, Colo., and Jack Gross of Lincoln. She is also survived by her grandchildren Rev. Matthew E. (and Sarah) Fowler of Grand Island, Amanda Lofing and Nathan Lofing, both of Minatare, and Amy Krichau and Brandon Krichau, both of Scottsbluff, and her great-grandchildren Noah James and Mara Elise Fowler, both of Grand Island. Her parents, one sister and four brothers preceded her in death. The Star-Herald February 11, 2013
