Bio

Charles Phillip Bland, 79, of O'Fallon, Ill., born Jan. 29, 1927 in Dugger, Ind., died Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2007 at Memorial Hospital in Belleville, Ill. Mr. Bland retired from the US Air Force as a Master Sergeant. Prior to his Air Force years, he served two years in the US Army, near the end of World War II and then six years in the US Navy aboard aircraft carriers. He was a flight engineer when he retired and loved flying, having accumulated over 10,000 hours flight time. After retiring from the military, he was self-employed and operated Bland Excavating Co. for a number of years. Phil grew up in a small rural town in Indiana. He loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing, ice skating and his ever present pet dogs. In 1953, he joined the US Air Force and was assigned to Scott AFB, Ill. There he met and married his wife of 50 years, the former Edith M. Hangsleben. They were married May 26, 1956 in the O'Fallon Evangelical & Reformed Church, now the O'Fallon United Church of Christ. Mr. Bland was a life member of O'Fallon Lodge 576, Ancient Free & Accepted Masons of Illinois, and Scottish Rite Bodies, Ainad Shriners and a former member of the Shriner's Arab Patrol. He was a life member of O'Fallon Post 805, Veterans of Foreign Wars, O'Fallon American Legion Post 137 and belonged to the O'Fallon United Church of Christ. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Ophia, nee Stanley, Bland, two brothers, Fred and Robert, a sister-in-law Roberta Bland, brothers-in-law, Wesley Hangsleben, Fred Hangsleben, Leslie Scheibel, Herman Scheibel, Morris Bertram, Elmer Kabureck Sr., Adwir Kraemer, James Sparks and Loren Lamb. He is survived by his wife Edith, nee Hangsleben, Bland, sons, Clinton (Kim) Bland of O'Fallon, Ill. and Steven (Annette) Bland of Collinsville, Ill., his daughters, Karen (Jeffrey) Glorioso of St. Louis, Mo., and Tondra of Florida, 3 grandchildren, Sgt. Todd (Nicole) Bland of Fort Sill, Okla., Nikki Marie Bland of O'Fallon, Ill. and Robert Bland of Collinsville, Ill. 2 great granddaughters, Riley and Haylie Bland of Okla. He is also survived by his sisters, Louise Lamb, Norma Sparks and Margaret Cardinal all of IN., sisters-in-law, Louise Bland of IN., Virginia Scheibel-Kraemer, Evelyn Bertram, Blanche Scheibel, Marlene Kabureck, all of O'Fallon, Ill., two brothers-in-law, Harold (Belle) Hangsleben and Norman Hangsleben of O'Fallon, Ill., and many nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Dr. James Wade and the staff of Bohannon Care Center for the kind and loving care Phil received during his long struggle with Alzheimers Disease. Burial in Shiloh Cemetery, Shiloh, Ill.
