Son of William and Nancy Wheeler who came from Tennessee to Texas about 1840. On their way, they stopped in Arkansas for their last child Preston to be born. Listed in the book "Confederate Soldiers of Shelby County, Texas" compiled by Bennie E. Nix in 1965. "Wheeler, Preston, no cem rec, Pvt, 1st Texas lancers, Col. Horace Randall, commanding, enlisted at Shelbyville 2nd April 1862, age 23, 3 years or war." He was murdered in 1870 and his body was never found. It was thought that the murderers threw his body into the river.
