Obituary Dallas Morning News Aug. 27, 2002 Fordyce L. "FORDY" Sims, born July 6, 1927 to Fordyce & Hester Chauvin Sims. He passed away August 26, 2002. He served in the U.S. Navy and the Texas National Guard. He joined the Dallas Fire Department in 1949 and was totally devoted to Fire fighting and rescue. Rising quickly through the ranks and retiring as Battalion Chief of District 9 in 1978. He joined the DeSoto Fire Department in 1971, serving as Training Officer and retiring in 1992. He also served in the Cedar Hill, Duncanville & DeSoto Volunteer Fire Departments. He attended the Texas A & M Fire School and instructed there for 29 years. Instructing for tank fires and later as lead instructor for vehicle fires and rescue. He experienced kidney failure in the early 1980's and received a transplant which was to give him 7 to 10 years of additional life, but served him for 18 years. Survived by his wife: Jodie Sims; Sons & daughters in law: Gary & Linda Sims, Ricky & Karen Sims, Derrick & Dusti Sims; Son: Kyle Dillard; Brothers & sisters in law: Lowell & Mary Sims, J. T. & Carlene Sims, Jerry & Carol Sims; Sister: Sara Antink; Grandchildren: Josh, Hunter, Keri, Aaron, Joey & Rylie Sims; 6 Nephews & 3 Nieces. Services will be held Wednesday, August 29, 2002 at 10:30 A.M. WEST/HURTT FUNERAL CHAPEL, with Chaplain Denny Burris of Dallas Fire Rescue officiating. Interment will follow in Dallas/Fort Worth National Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday evening from 7 to 9 PM. DeSoto Fire Department Honor Guard will serve as pallbearers. Memorials may be made to the National Kidney Foundation of Texas, 13500 Midway, Suite 101, Dallas, TX 75244.
