KEARNEY -Van J. Vopat, 98, of Kearney died Monday, Jan. 14, 2013, in Kearney. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at O'Brien Straatmann Redinger Funeral Home in Kearney. The Rev. Dean Pofahl will officiate. Burial will be in the Kearney Cemetery. Mr. Vopat was born March 19, 1914, in Wolbach to James and Stazie (Cerny) Vopat. Survivors of the immediate family include his wife, Minnie of Kearney, two sons and daughters-in-law, Frank and Gudrun of Redding, Calif., and Gary and Sue of Austin, Texas; two daughters and sons-in-law, Dorothy and Doug Nutter of Kearney and Shirley and Bruce May of Tampa, Fla.; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Eleanor Rohla of Winner, S.D. He grew up at Wolbach and received his education in Nebraska and South Dakota. Van was married to W. Minnie Bruha on Nov. 10, 1942 in Ord. They made their home in Sargent. He was self employed and was involved in various professional ventures. He was a member of many clubs and organizations. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister.
