daughter of Albert James and Abbie Agnes (Hasbrouch) Close Mary Joan Schmidt, 84, of Cedar Falls, died Tuesday, January 8, at University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics, Iowa City. She was born November 17, 1928, in La Porte City, the daughter of Albert James and Abbie Agnes Hasbrouch Close. She married Emil Henry Schmidt on June 10, 1947, in Niles, Mich. Mary graduated from Sacred Heart School and was a homemaker. Survivors include: her husband, Emil, of Cedar Falls; three daughters, Cheri (Gary) Monaghan of Waverly, Luann (Dewain) Benson and Lynette (Don) Dietz all of Waterloo; 8 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by: her parents; five brothers and six sisters. Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Public visitation from 4-8 p.m. Friday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street, where there will be a 7 p.m. vigil service. Visitation also one hour prior to services Saturday at the church. Mary enjoyed her grandchildren, crafting, crochet, collecting Boyd Bears, Serafin Angels and playing cards.
