As told by one of his direct descendants, and confirmed in the book, Poley Morgan, Son of a Texas Scalawag written by another descendant, his great grandson, Dr. Frank H. Smyrl, his death was the result of being murdered under tenuous circumstances. At some point during Reconstruction, Frank Morgan was elected/appointed as the Smith County Tax Assessor and Collector. The job was not popular even in good times, but even less so during the hard times of Reconstruction, and that fact was compounded due to the unpopular government that had been installed by the Union during Reconstruction. In fact, Frank was seen as a traitor for working for the Union authorities and according to the book, he was publicly shunned, even though he had fought on the Confederate side. On the morning of the 24th of February, 1870, Frank Morgan began the roughly 10 mile journey from his farm near where FM 346 and Highway 69 intersect presently, but he never arrived. After a sufficient amount of time, authorities dispatched several soldiers to check on him, and he was found murdered about 4 miles from his farm, somewhere I believe to be near where Colonial Hills Baptist Church is now. His is the earliest marked grave in the Rather Cemetery. Most of the information in this paragraph comes from Ancestry or FamilySearch included in the body of this paragraph and the book, Poley Morgan, Son of a Texas Scalawag. Served in the 1st Alabama Infantry Regiment, Company D during the Civil War. Stepson of James Bearness Rather and son of Elias Morgan and Lucinda Hudson Rather.
