Bio

George Vinc Marek passed away on Sunday, March 25, 2012, at the age of 90. He was born March 18, 1922 in Coupland, the second youngest of 11 children to Joseph A. Marek and Lidmila Hejl Marek. He attended Rices' Crossing and Taylor schools. He enlisted in the Navy in 1942 at the age of 20 and served his country as a Fire Controlman 2nd Class on the USS Case. In recent years he attended many "Tin Can Sailor" reunions across the country and specifically returned to Hawaii in 1991 to attend the 50th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. He was honorably discharged in 1945. George married Doris LaRue Briggs on June 22, 1947; they were happily married for 39 years until her death in 1986. In 1949 they moved to Corpus Christi and began a family. In 1958 George opened his electrical contracting company in Portland, Texas which he operated until 1979 when they relocated to Johnson City. George continued his work as an electrical contractor until retirement. He was an active member of the volunteer fire department in Portland and he was also an active member of the Lions Club in Portland and Johnson City. In 1989 he began to volunteer his services as a master electrician to the Blanco County Courthouse in Johnson City, for their "Lights Spectacular", and gladly provided this service for many years. George truly enjoyed his life in the Texas Hill Country. In addition to his wife, George was preceded in death by his 10 brothers and sisters and a granddaughter. He is survived by two daughters, Jan and husband, James Biggs (Dallas), Karen and husband, David Freer (Sandy, Texas); and son, Curtis Marek (The Highlands, Texas); eight grandchildren, Amanda Biggs, Chris Biggs, Jennifer Wilson, Nichole Jones, Melanie Wingo, Jason Freer, Lacey Jaeger and Camran Marek; nine great-grandchildren, Caden, Heidi, Hannah, Steven, Ashley, Addison, Farrah, Colin and Casey; and many nieces and nephews and their families. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m., Tuesday, March 27, at Crofts Funeral Home in Johnson City, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday with Pastor Ernest Topper officiating. Interment will follow at Miller Creek Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in memory of George Marek to the Tin Can Sailors, P. O.
